Jacques Cartier River

This is one of the many salmon ladders along the Jaques Cartier river.  These were installed after logging stopped on the river so as the increase the formerly dwindling salmon population.
The Jaques Cartier river has been used for logging ever since 1806 when Napoleon cut off the timber supplies from other Baltic countries to Britain.  Consequently Britain turned to its colonies for timber.  This is how the timber trade on this river first began.  Logging has been stopped on this river and the area around it became a provincial park in 1981.  There are still many signs of a former industry along this river such as dams and mills.  This river is a big attraction to canoe and kayak enthusiasts because it is relatively close location to populated areas and because of its class 4 rapids.
